Ladera Wins First 8 and Under Tournament Championship!

The future of Ladera Little League could not be brighter as its 8 and Under team brought home the gold in the leagues first ever Little League tournament in that age group.  The team went undefeated and beat Culver City in the championship game 18 to 10.  However, the game started off rocky for Ladera. Culver City jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. This was the first time that Ladera had been behind during the entire tournament, so the LLL players had to keep their poise as Culver City's ace pitcher, Chazz Martinez, was able to keep Ladera's powerful offense at bay until the third inning.  The Ladera team was up to the task in that frame as Ezra Moore got the offense started with a double in the bottom of the third inning. Avery McCoy followed with an RBI single. After a couple of walks and some key RBI hits by Antoine Moten and Addae Madison, the Ladera 8U team was back in the game with the score tied at 7. Isaiah Horton, Ezra Moore, Desmond Gates and Adari Lesley combined to pitch a solid game for the Ladera 8U team. The coaching staff used all available pitchers in order to hold the Culver City offense to only three more runs for the rest of the game. Ladera went on to score many runs in the fourth and fifth innings off of hits by Ezra Moore, Antoine Moten, Desmond Gates, Nick Robinson, and Isaiah Horton.  Smart base running by Michael Bearden and Max Winlock during the fourth inning helped set the table for the RBI hitters. At the end of 5 1/2 innings, the score was 18-10. A huge win for the Ladera’s youngest team.

Ladera Majors All Stars Come from Behind in 6th to Defeat Central Altadena LL and Advance to Temple City Tourney Semi’s!

The Ladera LL Majors All Stars were on the verge of elimination from the Al Millham Memorial Tournament in Temple City when the team came from behind with 1 out in the top of the last inning to defeat a determined Central Altadena LL team 8 to 6.  With LLL down 5 to 6, substitute player Grant Craddolph led off the final inning with an important walk.   Then Harrison McElroy stepped to the plate with 1 out and promptly hit an opposite field “no doubter” homerun to right over the handball walls on the playground beyond the fence.   Equan Martin followed with a tape rod shot to Left Field to add an insurance run in back-to-back homerun fashion.  It was Martin’s second of the game and third for the tourney.  McElroy struck out the side in the bottom of the 6th frame and Ladera advanced to play the Temple City Cyclones of Temple City American LL, Monday, July 28, at 7:45 PM in the semi-final round.

It looked like it would be an easy victory for LLL as it jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead in the first inning.  After Christopher “Beebop” Robinson and McElroy walked, Martin and Greg Carter combined for the first back-to-back homerun sequence of the game.  Craddolph added a RBI on a fielders choice in the third inning for the 5th LLL run.

Martin was also the starting pitcher and shutout Central Altadena into the second inning when he was lifted in a calculated move to save him for the next game.  However, LLL had some defensive miscues that allowed C.A.L.L. to take the lead in the fourth inning.  Despite the miscues, there was one bright spot on defense as Aaron Lyons, McElroy, and Martin combined for a smooth 4-6-3 double play.

Directions to the Temple City Little League field are as follow:

Take the 10 freeway past downtown.  Note that the 10 will S curve before you get to the section near Cal State LA.    Continue on the 10 about 9 miles past downtown LA and exit on Rosemead Blvd.   Take the Pasadena (North) option on the Rosemead exit.   Go north on Rosemead for about 3 miles to Longden Ave.   Take a right on Longden Ave to Oak Ave and go about 1/2 mile.  The park is at that corner.  Take a right turn at Oak and enter the parking lot on the left.

Ladera Majors All Stars Advance to Single Elimination Round at Temple City as 3rd Seed!

The Ladera LL Majors All Stars lost to West Covina LL 10 to 7, on Thursday, July 25, 2008 but still made the cut to move on as the second team out of their pool and the third seed overall in the Millham Memorial Tournament.   The pinstripe clad Ladera team will take on Central Altadena LL, the 6th and final seed on Saturday, July 26 at 4 PM for the rights to play Monday in the semi-final game.

Ladera jumped out to a 3 to zero lead, but struggled on defense and offense in the latter part of the game.   The offense was generated primarily by 2 run homers by Equan Martin and Robert Landry.    Substitute player Cash London also drove in a run with an RBI.

Ladera Majors All Stars are 2 and 0 in Pool Play at Temple City!

The Ladera LL Majors All Stars defeated Alhambra LL 6 to 4 to stay undefeated in pool play at the Al  Millham Memorial Little League invitational tournament in Temple City.  Ladera fell behind 4 to 0 as they faced the hardest throwing pitching they had seen all season with the Alhambra hurler throwing over 70 miles-per-hour.  The Alhambra pitcher struck out the side in the first inning.   However, Ladera used their power game to chip away at the lead.  Christopher “Beebop” Robinson homered with a shot to right field in the third inning that landed in the jungle-jim beyond the fence.   Robert Landry followed with his first post season home run this year with a blast to left field in the fourth inning.   Harrison McElroy continued the fireworks in the fifth frame with another towering opposite field homer to right field to make the score 4 to 3.  McElroy was sharp on the hill as usual, however, several defensive miscues lead to 4 unearned runs in the first three innings.  McElroy struck out 13 for the game and gave up only 3 hits and 2 walks.  He also accounted for one out with a pick off of a runner at third base with Equan Martin getting the assist.  Ladera shot out Alhambra the last three innings to setup the last inning heroics.   Greg Carter led off the inning with an infield single.  Jorden Webb missed ending the game by 2 inches as he hit a double that hit the top of the left field fence but bounced back into to play.  Then Landry finished his great game by hammering a three run homer over well over the left field fence.

LLL will complete pool play Thursday, July 24 at 5 PM against West Covina LL. The top 6 teams from pool play will advance to the single elimination championship round which begins on Saturday, July 26 and concludes on Thursday, July 31.

Ladera 9U Team Plays Well in Tourney!

Ladera Majors All Stars Fall in District 25 Championship Game!

The Ladera Majors All Stars lost to Culver City LL 7 to 5 in the District 25 championship game.   Ladera showed heart in fighting back from a 5 to 2 deficit late in the game, but fell short.  Unfortunately, LLL failed to take advantage of numerous opportunities leaving many runners on-base including three times with the bases loaded and two runners in the last inning.  However, we are proud of the team’s accomplishment of establishing Ladera LL as a force in District 25 in the league’s first year as a member.  We also thank the parents and fans for their support as the bleachers were rockin’ with Ladera spirit!

Ladera Majors All Stars Comeback in 6th inning and Hangs on to Defeat Beverly Hills in Seven!

The Ladera Majors All Stars scored three in the top of the 6th inning in the grips of elimination.  Then after losing the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, they scored 2 more in the extra inning to secure the 5 to 3 victory.   The Ladera team struggled to score runs in the game until the 6th against lefty pitcher Quinn Brodie.   The only threat up until that point came in the top of the third when Harrison McElroy and Jorden Webb hit consecutive two out singles.   However, Brodie retired the next batter leaving the only hits he allowed in the game stranded.   Fortunately, Ladera also got great pitching.   Christopher Robinson gave up just two runs in the first two innings to keep Ladera within striking distance.   McElroy relieved Robinson in the third and kept BHLL scoreless until the bottom of the 6th frame.

The elimination defying heroics for Ladera began in the top of the 6th inning when Greg Carter doubled off the BHLL reliever.  Carter was followed by Robinson who also doubled.   Then Lemuel Parker saved the day with a triple to left.   His quick feet also got him home as he scored on a wild pitch to give LLL the 3 to 2 lead.

However, Ladera could not hold the lead.   After a strike out, McElroy gave up his first walk of the game.  After another strike out the next batter got aboard on a fielding error by McElroy.   Then BHLL scored the tying run on a double steal.   McElroy then struck out the last batter of the inning to preserve the tie score and the extra inning bid.

In the top of the 7th, Jason Ball led off with a single.  Then McElroy redeemed himself from the error by delivering his second home run of the tourney over the right field fence.

In the bottom of the 7th, the BHLL team threatened again with consecutive two out hits.  However, Jorden Webb caught a deep fly ball near the warning track to secure the victory.

Ladera will advance to Play Culver City LL in the first championship game on Wednesday, July 9 at 5:30 PM at North Venice Little League.  It will be a rematch of their only loss.   Please visit the District 25 All Stars web page at http://www.cadistrict25.org/allstarmenu2008.htm for double elimination brackets and directions to the venue.

Ladera Majors All Stars Survive a Tight One!

The Ladera Majors All Stars defeated Santa Monica 2 to 1 in a tight pitchers’ dual.   Fortunately, Ladera pitcher Equan Martin was superior in that dual giving up only 1 unearned run in a complete game.  Martin only allowed 2 hits in the game.   Ladera struggled offensively but produced enough offense to prevail.   They were frustrated in the first inning when Harrison McElroy hit one off the right field fence but was held to a single.   Martin then singled to center but McElroy was thrown out by a fine throw in an attempt to advance to third on the play.   Ladera finally got on the board when Jorden Webb doubled off the left field fence and advanced and came home on a throwing error to third base after a wild pitch.   Santa Monica tied the game on a error later in the inning.   However, Lemuel Parker delivered the big winning run in the 4th inning when he homered over the center field fence.

Ladera’s defense saved the victory in the last two innings.  Christopher Robinson made a fine play in the fifth inning on a sharp grounder to the hot box at third base.   In the final inning, Santa Monica got two base runners on.   Martin induced a ground ball with two outs and McElroy at shortstop and Aaron Lyons at second base combined to make a well executed force play to end the game.

Ladera Majors All Stars Record Big Win in District 25 Debut!

Ladera Majors All Stars entered District 25 tournament play on a strong note by defeating Malibu Little League 9 to 2.   Ladera exhibited a high powered offense with 14 hits, striking early with 8 runs in the first three innings.    In the first frame, Harrison McElroy and Jorden Webb walked.   Equan Martin followed with a single to drive in McElroy.   Robert Landry singled later in the inning to drive in Webb.   In the second inning, Aaron Lyons led off with a walk and was followed by a Jason Ball single.   McElroy then doubled to drive in both runners.  Webb finish the inning’s scoring with a single. In the third inning, Brett Ball walked and Aaron Lyons nearly went yard when he doubled off the left field fence.   Jason Ball doubled to drive both runners in.  Ladera’s other run was scored in the fourth inning when Christopher Robinson singled to drive in Greg Carter who had also singled.

Ladera also benefited from a great pitching outing by Harrison McElroy.  He gave up only two unearned runs off of two hits and two walks.   McElroy recorded 5 strikeouts in the five innings he pitched.  Equan Martin got the save by pitching the last inning.  He struck out 2 while giving  up no hits or walks.

Ladera Minors All Stars Advance with Two Victories!

Game 2 – Ladera 10, Wrigley 0

Ladera stayed alive in the winner’s bracket on Monday with a 10-0 mercy victory over Wrigley.  The game featured solid pitching, stingy defense, aggressive base running, and clutch hitting.  Gary McCoy got the start on the mound for Ladera.  Gary completed a 4 inning no hit shut out.  He struck out 5 and walked 5.  He was backed by the stellar defense of Jaylon Mclaughlin at second base who recorded 2 put outs and 2 assists.  Catcher Arron Greenfield was also solid throwing out a batter attempting to steal second.  Grant Craddolph recorded 2 puts and 2 assists, and Derek Marshall recorded 3 put outs at first.

Offensively, the team collected 10 runs on 10 hits and benefited from 3 errors.  Gary went 3-3, scored 2 runs and collected an RBI with well placed bunts.   Jaylon went 2-3 and scored 2 runs.  Arron had a monster day at the plate with 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBIs.  Lawrence “Cadillac” Gilliam contributed a double to deep left field and scored a run.  Grant went 1-3 with an RBI single.  Derek also contributed a hit, a run and an RBI.   Robert Togia drove in the 10th run to complete the mercy on a mishandled ball to first base.

Ladera will face Culver Marina in a battle of undefeated teams on Sunday at 4PM.

Game 1 – Ladera 3,  Culver City 0

With strong pitching and timely hitting, the Ladera 9/10 All Star team got off on the right foot in the District 25 All Star Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Culver City.  Starting pitcher, Grant Craddolph, was outstanding on the mound for Ladera.  In 5 innings of shut out work, he struck out 10 and allowed no hits.  He also participated in a double play with Derek Marshall at first base to end the 5th inning.  Grant was relived on the mound by Gary McCoy who went 2/3 of an inning with 2 strikeouts and Dominic Johnson who through 1 pitch to earn a strikeout and the save.

Defensively, Ladera was led by Arron Greenfield behind the plate.  Arron recorded 13 put outs and an assist on a great throw to Gary covering second base to nail a runner attempting to steal.  Blake “Do Work” White also stepped up and snagged a sharply hit ball to shallow left field.   Derek also recorded a put out at first base.

Ladera scored 3 runs on 8 hits.  Kyle Thompson led the way going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s.  Dominic went 2-2 and scored a run.   Second baseman Jaylon Mclaughlin went 1-2 and scored a run.  Kaelin Woodard contributed a huge RBI line drive to left field and scored a run.  Gary had the remaining hit for Ladera.

LLL Majors Yankees Win District 25 TOC Championship in First Season!

The LLL Yankees captured the major division championship in the District 25  Tournament of Champions by defeating Malibu LL 3 to 1.   It was a much cherished accomplishment as it was LLL’s first season in its new District 25 home.  LLL benefited from an exceptional, in-the-clutch pitching performance from league 11 year-old Robert Landry.  Landry was almost perfect thru 3 innings, only walking the 8th batter he faced to that point.  He recorded 7 strikeouts total for the game while giving up only 3 hits and walking a total of 2 batters.  Landry also made a “Highlights at 11” quality play on what would have been an infield single when he flipped the ball over his shoulder while on his knees to Gregory Carter covering first base.

True to form, the Yanks struck on offense in the first inning.  Harrison McElroy walked and was followed by a single from Landry.  McElroy then stole 3rd base which allowed Landry to move up to second base on a subsequent steal.  Gregory Carter then delivered a big hit via a single to left center to score the two base runners.  The other Yankees run was scored in the third inning when Landry singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a throwing error to 3rd base after attempting to advance on another wild pitch.

This championship game was eerily similar to the Yankee’s semi-final game on Tuesday.  Once again, the pinstrippers led 3 to 0 going into the last inning but saw Malibu spoil the shutout with  1 out in the top of the frame after a walk and a single and bring the tying run to the plate.  However, Landry struck out the next batter on a full count for the second out on his 78th pitch.  Landry then faced another potentially tying run at the plate in the person of a power hitter, but also struck him out on a full count and the celebrations began for Ladera Little League’s first TOC championship in many years.  The cheer continued on through closing day ceremonies later that day.  Box Score.

LLL Juniors Gold Team Loses Championship Game !

The Juniors Gold team was missing two key players but still gave its a go in the Championship game losing  10 – 0 to the West LA Angels.   Ladera is still very proud and appreciative of the players and coaches on this team that survived to the end and helped establish the Juniors Gold program in its first year!

LLL Majors Yankees Wins with Defense to Advance to District 25 TOC Championship Game!

The Ladera LL Majors Division champion Yankees proved that they can win with their defense rather than their prolific offense if necessary as they defeated an excellent, well coached Culver City league champion team 3 to 1.   It was only the second loss of the season for the Culver City team which also happened to be named the Yankees.   Harrison McElroy pitched a brilliant complete game and had a shutout until CC was down to its last out.  He struck out ten batters while walking none, throwing 55 strikes versus only 23 balls.   McElroy was helped by great middle infield play from second baseman Brett Ball who had 2 putouts and 2 assists and shortstop Christopher “Beebop Robinson” who had 1 putout and 1 assist.

McElroy Brings It

Even though the LLL Yankees depended on their defense, they still took advantage of their power game to generate the necessary runs to win.   Robert Landry got a two out single in the first inning.  He was followed by Greg Carter who hit a laser shot line drive over the right field fence.   The homerun was his second of the tournament and the Yankees’ 8th over all for the TOC.  Robert Landry also helped produce the third run when he singled again to left field.  He was driven home by Robinson who hit a hard single pass the CC shortstop, Ryan Dobson, who also turned in a brilliant defensive performance.  Landry and Robinson both went 2 for 3.   McElroy and Brett Ball also added singles to complete the hit total of 7.

The game got tense after two outs in the last inning.   CC got two consecutive hits to score a run.   Then CC catcher Seb Cervantez came to the plate representing the tying run.  He had hit successfully twice before accounting for all of CC’s base runners prior to the sixth inning.    However, McElroy struck him out to end the game and secure the semi-final win. The District 25 TOC championship game will be Saturday, June 14 at 9:30 AM with opponent determined by the Malibu LL versus North Venice semi-final game.

LLL Majors Yankees Win TOC Quarterfinal Game with More Power.

The Yankees used their power game once again to defeat the Santa Monica American League champion Angels 10 to 5.  Six of those runs were scored by the long ball.   Harrison McElroy began the fireworks with a massive shot to left field that also stopped the minor division game when the ball landed on their field at Culver City National.   The offensive production continued with a double by Brett Ball in the second inning.  After Shain Quinn and Darien Geyen drew walks to load up the bases,  Jason Ball delivered a grand slam over the center field fence.   It was his second homer of the TOC.

McElroy followed with a double and Robert Landry scored him on a hard hit single that bounced high off the third base bag.    Gregory Carter then scored Landry on a double to complete the scoring in the inning.  The Yanks struck again in the top of the fifth when Brett Ball singled to score Carter who led off the inning with a double.

Jason Ball Grand Slam Party

Gregory Carter Drives One

The Yankees pitching was sharp into the 5th inning.   McElroy struck out 5 of the 7 batters he faced.  Christopher “Beebop” Robinson pitched into the fifth inning and Brett Ball closed the game.   The SMLL Angels made the game interesting when they scored 5 runs in the 5th.   One run was a bases loaded walk while the others was a shocking grand slam.

However, McElroy gave the Yankees an important insurance run with an opposite field homer to right field in the top of the 6th.   It was his third of the tourney.    Landry followed with a single, moved to third on some aggressive base running and then scored on a throwing error.

Brett Ball shut the Angels out in the bottom of the 6th.   He helped himself by starting a 1-6-3 (Ball-McElroy-Robinson) double play to end the game.

The Yankees will play the Culver City Little League champion Yankees on Tuesday, June 10 in the TOC semi-final game at 5:20 PM.

LLL Juniors Get Closer to Finals.

The Ladera Juniors are one victory away from the finals in the District 25 Tournament of Champions. The team logged its third victory in a row in the tournament on Sunday with a 17 to 5 triumph over the West Los Angeles Athletics. The team’s prolific offense was once again on display as it produced two runs in each of the first two innings and put the game away with seven runs in the seventh.

Lead off man, Brennan Hughes, fulfilled his job of igniting the offense as he got on base in all six of his plate appearances. Every member of the team got on base at least once in the game as Ladera obtained 18 hits. Darryl Paschel, Devin Dixon, Langston McElroy and Chase Jones each hit for extra bases. Singles were turned in by Hughes, Ausar Madison, Colburn Pittman, Augustin Quinones and Jean-Paul Goudeau. Joshua Hill-Mayes also got on base during the game. Derrick Preston sat out his second game in a row with a leg injury but is expected back in the lineup for Ladera’s next contest.

Majors Division Playoff Game 4: Pirates  2 – Yankees 4

The Yankees captured the Ladera Majors championship game, defeating the Pirates, 4 to 2 and ending the buccaneers great post season run.   The Pirates got their offense started early in the first inning when Devin Johnson was hit by a pitch from Yankees starting pitcher Harrison McElroy and then was moved to third base when Jaelin James doubled to left field.  Johnson then scored on a pickoff attempt error.   After that point, McElroy settled in and kept the Pirates scoreless into the fifth inning.  He struck out 13 for entire game while allowing 2 hits and just provided one free pass through the one hit batter.   Meanwhile, Jaelin James delivered a great first two innings of shut out pitching for the Pirates.   However, the Yankees finally got their offense going in the third inning when Jason ball singled with one out.   McElroy then followed in dramatic fashion with a home run blast to left field that hit a car cruising down the drive through the park.  Two batters later Gregory Carter hit another towering blast to left center.    However, the Pirates mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth inning.   Lemuel Parker and Joshua Holmes got on base on consecutive fielding errors.   Parker scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Aaron Berry.   The Yankees then cut the scoring off with a ground out to Carter and a strikeout.   The Yankees added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when McElroy doubled to right center and scored on an RBI single from Christopher “Beebop” Robinson.  James ended the inning for the bucs with a strike out.  He had 9 for the complete game and gave up 7 hits, a base on balls and a hit batter.  McElroy entered the hill in the top of the 6th inning with just 7 pitches left in his pitch count limit.  However, he struck out the first batter in 3 pitches and retired the next batter in 2 pitches with a ground out to Brett Ball.   That enabled McElroy to face another batter that he struck out and the Yankees secured the championship.

Majors Division Playoff Game 2: Pirates  0 – Yankees 9

The Yankees defeated the Pirates 9 to 0 behind great pitching from Harrison McElroy and Robert Landry.  Greg Carter also came in to make 1 pitch to end the game.  McElroy struck out 7 while giving up 2 hits and walking none while Landry struck out 5, giving up a single hit and only one free pass.  McElroy was helped by a great play in the first inning after Devin Johnson singled.   The next batter, Jorden Webb, doubled into right center.  However, Yankees right fielder, Darien Geyen, and 2nd basemen Brett Ball combined on a relay throw to catcher Jason Ball to throw out the runner attempting to score on the hit.

Pirates pitcher Armannee Simmons also got off to a good start hurling two innings of shutout ball.  However, the Yankees struck in the third after Kyle Thompson walked and was followed by a Jason Ball single.   McElroy then cleared the bases with a triple.  McElroy was scored by Landry who followed with a single.  Simmons controlled the Yankees in the third, however the Yanks got their bats going again in the 5th.  The big hits were a 2 baser by Greg Carter and a bases loaded double by McElroy that drove in all three runners.  The Yanks threatened to end the game by 10 run rule in the inning, however Shabaka Johnson made an outstanding backhand play at third on a hot ground ball shot off the bat of Landry and Johnson completed the play with a strong throw to first in time.

The Yankees victory advances them to Tuesday’s championship round game where they will play the winner of Monday’s White Sox vs Pirates elimination game.

Minors Division Playoff Game 1: Cardinals 6 – Red Sox 7

The Minors division playoffs began with a great finish.   The Red Sox jumped out to a 5 to 3 lead over the 3rd seeded Cardinals and held it going into the last inning.   Most of the 2nd seeded Sox’s runs were scored on a throwing error.  However, the Cardinals were able to push across three runs in the top of the sixth frame.  The big hit was a home run by Addae Madison.  However, Derrick Marshall was able to retire the last batter to keep the Red Sox within striking distance.  The Cardinals, who were strapped for pitching after a tough week to qualify for the playoffs, called on a committee of closers with lefty Devin Bowdre, and right handers Mychael Wells, and Shane Martin.  A couple of Red Sox got on base, but after two strike outs the tag team brought the Cards within one out of pulling off an upset.   However, Derrick Marshall came up to bat as the last chance for the Sox.  After two strikes, he hit a high fly ball to left center field.  Victory was still within the grasp of the Cardinals; however a collision between the two outfielders prevented them from completing the play and two runs scored to end the game.

Majors Division Playoff Game 1: Pirates 8 – White Sox 4

In the majors division, the 3rd seeded Pirates upset the 2nd seeded White Sox 8 to 4.   The White Sox got three runs in the first inning.   One of the big hits was a double by Rueben Peters who almost went yard when he hit one off the left field fence.  However, Pirates starting pitcher Jorden Webb, got the game under control and only allowed 2 more runs into the fifth inning giving up only 3 hits total for the game.  One of those hits was a triple by Navari Julius who scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Equan Martin.  Shane Early was the starting pitcher for the White Sox and held the buccaneers scoreless early.  However, the Pirates had a big inning in the 4th with consecutive doubles by Webb and Shabaka Johnson and a single by Chanel Woodard.   Then the big blow came when Lemuel Parker hit his first career home run which also happened to be a grand slam.   The Pirates had 7 hits for the game.  Armannee Simmons went to the mound for the Pirates in the fifth to get the save while giving up no hits.

Major division game 1 box scores will be posted later today.

There were plenty of thrills leading into championship weekend.  The night before, the White Sox clobbered the Yankees 11- 1 to move into a dead tie with the Yanks for the regular season 1st place position.   However, the Yanks prevailed 2 to 0 in the 3 inning tie breaker showdown that same evening.
